BIOGRAPHY: Harvey's Civil War volunteer enlistment record describes him as having dark eyes, black hair, a dark complexion, and 5 feet 8 inches tall.  He was working as a farmer when he enlisted, with his brother William, in the Union Army as a Private in Company D, 12th Regiment, Ohio Infantry at Xenia, Ohio on 14 January 1864.  He reported for service at Columbus, Ohio on 18 January 1864.

MARRIAGE: Havrvey and Mary Ann were married by John Orr. Their marriage record (according to the pension records) states:
"The State of Ohio Greene County SS:

were joined in marriage by me on the 8th day of October 1861.

John Orr Jr. J. P. for C Township Greene Co Ohio"

Harvey's Civil War pension records for Mary show in various places the year of their marriage as 1861, 1863, and 1864.  The year 1861, however, is consistent with the birth of their child Margaret and their marriage record.

DEATH: He died in action at Cloyd’s Mountain, Pulaski County, Virginia. In a battle which engaged about 10,000 men on May 9, 1864, Union Brig. Gen. George Crook's three brigades (6,100 men) on a raid into southwestern Virginia encountered a patchwork Confederate force under Brig. Gen. Albert Jenkins at Cloyd’s Mountain. Fighting was furious and hand-to-hand. Casualties were heavy for the size of the forces engaged: Union 10%, Confederate 23%, about 1,500 total. Jenkins was mortally wounded.  On May 10, Brig. Gen. W.W. Averell’s raiders encountered a brigade under William “Grumble” Jones near Cove Mountain. After delaying the Union advance, the Confederates withdrew. The next day, Averell reached the New River Bridge on the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad, which he burned. Crook afterwards joined forces with Averell, and the united column withdrew to Meadow Bluff after destroying several important railroad bridges.

BIRTH: Civil War volunteer enlistment record dated 14 Jan 1864 states that he is 25 years old and that he was born in Rockingham county, Virginia.

MARRIAGE: His marriage to Mary is documented in many places in his Civil War pension records.  Included is a deposition from the Probate Court in Xenia, Greene Co., Ohio, dated 9 June 1864, which copies the contents of their marriage record.  Their marriage record is on microfilm in the Greene Co. Libary in Xenia.

Later, they lived in Marcus, Washington with their daughter Dora (Houchin) Newland's family.
