The Descendants of John HOUCHINS and Mary COSBY

Fifth Generation

44. Robert HOUCHINS (John HOUCHINS , Francis HOUCHINS , Edward HOUCHINS , Edward ) was born on 19 Nov 1810 in Louisa Co., Virginia. He died on 4 May 1899 in Lake View, Logan Co., Ohio. He was buried in Clay Twp., Auglaize Co., Ohio, Walnut Hill Cem..

BIRTH: Deposition by Robert Houchins in the settlement of the estate of James Houchins, file drawer H-5 in Logan Co., Ohio Probate Court dated 18 November 1895.

BIOGRAPHY: Robert was born in Louisa Co., Virginia in 1810 (see 2).  Nothing is known about him until he appears in Rockingham County in 1832, where he purchased land in 1846 (see 1).
Robert had a son, Albert, who I believe is from an unknown first marriage.  An 1852 Rockingham County, Virginia Guardianship Bond implies that one former wife (or mistress) may have been Louisa Moss, and that their sons were [Robert] Jewitt, Harvey, and William.
Robert later married Elizabeth Ferrell in about 1844, based upon the birth of their first son James (see 3).  Some date this marriage as 18 Oct 1852 based upon a Rockingham County marriage record for them of that date, but all other evidence suggests that their marriage dates to 1844.  My opinion is that their 1844 marriage was never officially recorded and it became necessary in 1852 due to legal issues with the previously mentioned Guardianship Bond.
Robert and Elizabeth left Virginia for Ohio in about 1852 or 1853. In the biography of Francis M. Taylor (see 3), it states that when Robert and Elizabeth came to Ohio, they were initially "living in Springfield for a time".  This makes some sense because the National Road ran from Wheeling, [West] Virginia and passed through Springfield, Ohio.  One Logan county Ohio article (which I cannot find at the moment) states that Robert had settled in Logan county by 1849.  He may have travelled there at that time, but his family remained in Virginia as shown by the birth of children there in 1850 and 1851.  The family stories are that he first camped in Logan County along county road 130 near the present day 7th Day Adventist Church in Bellefontaine.  He then proceeded on to Lakeview the next day.  He helped build the dikes that make up the Lewistown Reservoir (now called Indian Lake) and was granted nearby acreage for farmland in return.  This construction initially occured in 1851 and 1852.  That farmland is now at the junction of county road 87 and 275 about mile or two north of Lakeview.  The present day farmhouse, which I have seen, is across the road from the farmhouse that was indicated on an 1875 Stokes Township map.  The current resident of that farm (May 2002) has stated that he believes that there was originally a "cabin" across the road, due to the presence of an old well in that area.  So, the current farmhouse may not be the original one inhabited by Robert.  In 1855, he and Elizabeth ceded land to the Logan county school district for the building of a school.  This school (which is now gone) was just a few hundred feet south of their farmhouse at the previously mentioned county road junction.
Robert had the nickname of "Old Bobby".  One family story is that Robert was vehemently opposed to his sons joining the Union during the Civil War.  But sons Albert, Harvey, and William joined anyway and all died as a result.  Another story is that his son Erasmus, after moving back to Ohio from Tennessee (along with one of his brothers) tried to gain guardianship over Robert by claiming that he was not competent to handle his affairs.  Robert was declared competent and this caused him to be quite angry with his sons.  The other son may have been Robert J. based upon the statements made about he and Erasmus in Robert's will.

BIOGRAPHY: Notes:
 (1) The book "History of the Houchin Family of the United States" contains information about Robert Houchins and Elizabeth Ferrell on page 165 and 166.  It states:
"The Houchins of Logan county, Ohio are of the family of Robert Houchins who came into that county prior to 1860. It is not yet determined whether he is the same Robert as was living in Rockingham county, Virginia at an earlier date.
Robert of Rockingham was born in 1810, and first appears in records of that county in 1832. In 1846, he purchased of [unreadable] Hunton land on draft of Smith's Creek known by the name of Athens.  This Robert was probably married more than perhaps three times. October 18, 1852 he married Elizabeth Ferrel, dau. of George Ferrel of Rockingham county. Children were Jouett, born 1837; Harvey born 1839; William, born 1842; Fabias born 1845; Philip born 1847; Daniel born 1849; Perry born 1849; Erasmus born 1850.
Probable brothers and sister of Robert (living in same household) were Edward, born 1820; Thomas, born 1825; Mary, born 1827. Living nearby were Riley and Wilson, born 1815. [Unreadable] married Susan (?) and their first son was John, born 1849. [Unreadable] married Elizabeth Wean, May 8, 1849 in Rockingham county. Edward married Maria Jane (?) and one child was Dewitt.
... Robert Houchins of Logan county, Ohio, was born in 1810.  Children were Albert, born 1840; William, born 1841; James, born 1844; Silas, born 1846; George, born 1848; Erasmus, born 1849; Elisha, born 1852; Elizabeth, born 1853; Jenny, born 1855; a daughter, 1857; Elvira, born 1859."
 (2) Robert gave a deposition in the settlement of the estate of his brother James (file drawer H-5 in Probate Court, Logan County, Ohio). It reads:
"State of Ohio, Logan County S. S.
Robert Houchins being first duly sworn, says that he was born in Louisa County, Virginia on the 19th day of November 1810. That his father's name was John Houchins and his mother's name was Mary Houchins (nee) Cosby. Affiant further says that he had six brothers and two sisters named respectively William, James, Wilson, Abner, Edward, Thomas, Lucinda, and Mary. The said Lucinda Houchins and Abner Houchins left Louisa County Va in childhood about the year 1828 and moved to Augusta County Va and some time after that emigrated to the western States.  Lucinda afterward married a man by the name of Shane whose Christian name I do not remember.  The said James Houchins died without issue in the month of Febry 1874 or 1875 and Eli Van Horn Sr. was appointed Administrator of his Estate by the Probate Court of Logan County, Ohio. And that the interest the said Abner Houchins and Lucinda Shane in said Estate was not paid to them or their heirs for the reason that proof of their claim then to or their identity as relations and heirs was not satisfactory. And that said money is now held by the Treasurer of Logan County, Ohio.
Waiting such legal proof as will warrant its disbursement Affiant further says that neither of his sisters so far as he knows ever married a man by the name of Dushane but that the said Shane whom the affiant is informed is now dead was the husband of the said sister Lucinda Houchins. [Signed] Robert Houchins, X his mark.
Sworn to and subscribed before me a Notary Public This 18th day of November 1895. Isaac N. Zearing Notary Public in and for Logan County, Ohio.  Silas W. Houchins, witness."
 (3) In a book entitled "Historical Review of Logan County, Ohio" by Robert Kennedy (Chicago : S.J. Clarke Pub. Co., 1903), it states on page 95 in a section on Stokes Township "Robert Houchins was for very many years an active and most influential citizen".  Later, on page 344, is a biography of Robert's son-in-law Reverend Francis M. Taylor. It says of Robert "Mrs. Taylor's father became the owner of several hundred acres in the county.  In his family were nine children". It goes on to detail Robert's nine children starting with James B.

MARRIAGE: It is assumed that Robert had at least one marriage prior to Elizabeth Ferrell. In the "Historical Review of Logan County, Ohio" by Robert Kennedy (Chicago : S.J. Clarke Pub. Co., 1903), page 344 through 346, there is a biography of Rev. Francis M. Taylor. His wife was Ida B. Taylor, Robert's daughter. Her parents' family is listed as having nine children starting with her brother James B.  Also, the 1850 Census for Robert in Virginia shows three older children listed out of order (Jouett, Harvey, William).

BURIAL: Find A Grave Memorial# 66506393, no image. Site states Birth: unknown; Death: May 4, 1899. Aged 88y, 5m, 15d. Links to wife and children. Plot: Sec B Row 10.

He had the following children.

  54 M i
Albert J. HOUCHINS was born about 1841 in , , Virginia. He died on 25 Nov 1863 in Knoxville, Knox, Tennessee.

BIOGRAPHY: Not much is known about Albert. The 1860 census for his father Robert shows a son Albert who is 20 years old, but he is not listed in 1850.
He was working as a farmer when he enlisted for service with the Union in the Civil War. He joined Co. D, 45th Regiment Ohio Mounted Infantry at Bellefontaine, Ohio as a private and reported to Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio on 19 Aug 1862. His discharge paper describes him as aged 21 years, 5 feet 8 inches, light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. The muster rolls for his company show that he was "Sick in General Hospital, Lexington, Kentucky" during part of January and February 1863.
The records show that he was wounded on 18 Nov 1863 at Knoxville, Tennessee.  A siege of Union held Knoxville by the Confederate army began on 17 Nov 1863 and lasted until 4 Dec 1863. Confederate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet undertook his Knoxville expedition to divert Union troops from Chattanooga and to get away from Gen. Braxton Bragg, with whom he was engaged in a bitter feud. His failure to take Knoxville scuttled his purpose. This was the decisive battle of the Knoxville Campaign. This Confederate defeat, plus the loss of Chattanooga on November 25, put much of East Tennessee in the Union camp.

MARRIAGE: He probably never married.  No Civil War pension information for a widow was found with the National Archives when I requested it.  He appeared to be single in the 1860 census.

BIRTH: It is my belief that Albert is Robert's natural son by an unknown first marriage. Sources showing Robert's children by Elizabeth Ferrell don't show Albert, and he is not listed among the "orphans" left by Louisa Moss.

DEATH: Albert died on either 25 or 30 Nov 1863 from his battle wounds. One place in Albert's war record states that he was wounded in action at Resaca, Georgia. Resaca is about 120 miles southwest of Knoxville, but there wasn't a battle there in November of 1863, so the reference to Resaca, Georgia is either wrong or is referring to a separate incident.  The record which shows this is undated and written by someone different than the usual person who was keeping the muster roll for the Company.

BIRTH: Civil war discharge paper states that he was 21 and born in Virginia. This is probably his age at enlistment, which was 19 Aug 1862.
Census: Ohio, Logan Co., Stokes Twp, P.O. Muchinippi, page 116, 23 July 1860 (living with father Robert).

DEATH: Civil War discharge paper states "killed in action at Knoxville Nov 30, '63".  His regular Company muster roll for November and December 1863 shows he died on 25 Nov 1863.  Note that the Adjutant General's Office of Ohio has a record for an Andrew Houchins with nearly identical information for that of Albert - same Company and Regiment, about the same enrollment date, same information about death at Knoxville.

Robert also married 1 Louisa MOSS 1. Louisa died.

MARRIAGE: Her relationship to Robert is inferred from a Guardianship Bond for Robert Houchins, Rockingham Co., Virginia, dated 1852, which states that Robert Houchins posts a bond for orphans William, Jewit, and Harvey.  Parent listed as Louisa Moss. Info from Karyl Harding, Spokane, WA. I don't have a copy of the actual document.

Marriage Notes:

Have no evidence that there was actually a marriage.  The guardianship bond of 1852 indicates the parentage of three of the sons (William, Jewit, and Harvey) as being Louisa Moss.

Robert and Louisa had the following children.

+ 55 M ii Robert Jewitt HOUCHINS was born on 9 May 1837. He died on 5 Mar 1908.
+ 56 M iii Harvey H. HOUCHINS was born about 1838. He died on 9 May 1864.
  57 M iv
William S. HOUCHINS was born in Feb 1842 in , Rockingham Co., Virginia. He died on 29 Nov 1864 in Camp Parole, Anne Arundel Co., Maryland. He was buried in Annapolis, Anne Arundel Co., Maryland, Nat Military Cem.

BIOGRAPHY: WIlliam S. Houchins was born in 1842 at Rockingham county, Virginia.
The 1850 and 1860 census for his father Robert Houchins shows a son William who is 8 and 19 years old respectively. According to his Civil War records obtained from the National Archives, he was working as a farmer when he enlisted for service, with his brother Harvey, in the Union army in the Civil War. He joined Co. D, 12th Regiment Ohio Volunteers on 14 Jan 1864 at Xenia, Greene County, Ohio as a private and reported for service at Columbus, Ohio on 18 Jan 1864. At enlistment he was 21 years and 11 months old.  This would make his birth in February 1842.  His Muster Roll records state that he was born in Rockingham County, Virginia.  His "Record of Death and Internment" states that he lived in Logan County, Ohio prior to enlistment, that he was single, and gives the name of his father Robert Houchins as next of kin. His enlistment paper describes him as 5 feet 6 inches, dark complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair.
William was wounded and missing in action after a battle at Cloyd's Mountain, Pulaski County, Virginia on 9 May 1864.  He was captured by the Confederate forces on either the 9th or 11th of May (the records show both dates). His brother Harvey was killed there. This was a battle which engaged about 10,000 men on May 9, 1864. Union Brig. Gen. George Crook's three brigades (6,100 men) on a raid into southwestern Virginia encountered a patchwork Confederate force under Brig. Gen. Albert Jenkins at Cloyd’s Mountain. Fighting was furious and hand-to-hand. Casualties were heavy for the size of the forces engaged: Union 10%, Confederate 23%, about 1,500 total. Jenkins was mortally wounded.  On May 10, Brig. Gen. W.W. Averell’s raiders encountered a brigade under William “Grumble” Jones near Cove Mountain. After delaying the Union advance, the Confederates withdrew. The next day, Averell reached the New River Bridge on the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad, which he burned. Crook afterwards joined forces with Averell, and the united column withdrew to Meadow Bluff after destroying several important railroad bridges.
On 1 July 1864, while apparently still a prisoner, William was transferred to the 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteers due to the disbandment of the Ohio 12th.  He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond on 2 September 1864. He was then "paroled" to the Union on 12 September 1864 at either "Adkins Landing" or Varina, Virginia (which is southeast of Richmond).  Varina is within 10 miles of the infamous Confederate Libby Prison (now Smith Iron & Metal Co. Inc., located at 3000 Bells Road, Richmond, Virginia), though there is no information on exactly what prison he was in. The following is taken from the Encyclopedia of the Civil War:
"Libby Prison was almost always selected to confine officers, the enlisted men being imprisoned in one of the other prisons, Belle Isle for example.
There were a number of escapes from Libby. The most successful were by tunneling under the wall. The hazzards of escape were many. Libby Prison was a converted warehouse near the waterfront and the high water table and sandy ground caved in most tunnels before they could reach safety. Some caved in when it rained during the digging.
Next to planning to escape the next greatest hope was to be paroled. From the officers a signed promise was extracted promising not to engage in any military activity against the holder of the captives. The enlisted men were given an oral oath. The men were then assembled at some common point and held until an exchange could be made. A point system was established to determine the value of a prisoner. One private was worth 1 point, a lieutenant 2, captain 4, major 8, colonel 16 and a general 32.
The paroled Union soldiers in the East were sent chiefly to Camp Parole at Annapolis. Often the officers had to be separated from their men and did not report to the camp. Many were unwilling to resume army life and refused to do police duty or guard duty around their camp on the grounds that such duty was forbidden by their parole."
Other nearby prisons in which William may have been held were Belle Isle and Castle Thunder. After parole, William's Civil War records show that he reported to "Hospital Division 1" on 23 September 1864 at Camp Parole (shown as "Division No. 1 U. S. A. General Hospital, Annapolis, Md." on his Muster Roll for September and October).  It seems that he was never able to return to active duty.  He died on 29 November 1864 apparently at the Camp Parole hospital.

BIRTH: Civil War record "Declaration of Recruit" from the National Archives  states that he was 21 years 11 months old in January, 1864, giving his birth as February 1862.  He is listed as 22 years at his death in November 1864 in the "Record of Death and Internment".  Some places in those records show him 24 years old. The 1850 and 1860 census shows him as 8 and 19 respectively.

DEATH: William apparently died while still in the military hospital at Camp Parole, Maryland on 29 November 1864.  He was wounded in action on 9 May 1864 at the battle of Cloyd's Mountain, Pulaski County, Virginia and was taken prisoner. The cause of his death is listed as "Diarrhoea Chronic".  This may have been due to his battle wounds or from unsanitary conditions in the prison camp. A history of St. John's college in Annapolis describes the origin of Camp Parole:
"During the Civil War the College became a victim of the times. Annapolis, the capital city of a border state, the seat of the Naval Academy, and only 20 miles from Washington, proved to be important strategically. Students had been leaving the College to join both the Union and Confederate armies, and since tuition money was used to run the school, there were no funds to pay faculty or to maintain the campus. When the Union Army took over the grounds for a receiving station and barracks, St. John's was not in a position to protest. The campus served as a way station for Union troops that had been prisoners of the Confederacy. In 1863, when Camp Parole was built outside the city, the medical corps took over St. John's buildings, which became known as College Green Hospital."

DEATH: Civil War "Record of Death and Interment".

BURIAL: Civil War "Record of Death and Interment".

BURIAL: William was buried in "grave 266, Ash Grove Cemetery" with the name Houching. This is now the Annapolis National Cemetery, Section D, grave 93.
The Annapolis National Cemetery web site states:
"As Annapolis had two field hospitals - one at St. John's College and another at the U.S. Naval Academy (which school's scholastic functions had been temporarily relocated to Newport, Rhode Island for the duration of the War) - as well as a nearby parole camp, the city was selected as the site for one of the first cemeteries established" [as a national military cemetery].
"In August of 1862 Judge Nicholas Brewer leased to the government four and one-eigth acres of land, located roughly one mile from the two field hospitals, to be used as a cemetery for war casualties. The cemetery was originally called Ash Grove."

Robert also married Elizabeth FERRELL, daughter of George FERRELL, about 1844 in Rockingham Co., Virginia. Elizabeth was born 1 on 9 Oct 1821 in Virginia. She died 1 on 12 Dec 1889 in Logan Co., Ohio. She was buried in Clay Twp., Auglaize Co., Ohio, Walnut Hill Cem..
